Getting
to Belgium is easy and affordable
Road-Eurotunnel
Take the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais, then take
the A16 heading east direction Lille and Dunkerque. At Dunkerque you can
either turn right and head for Lille on the N225/E42, or continue on the
A16/E40 across the border staying on the E40 all the way to Bruges, Gent
and Brussels. To enter Belgium from the E42 Lille road turn off at jct13,
Steenvoorde, and continue on the N38 through Poperinge to Ieper (Ypres),
Kortrijk and Oudenaarde
Rail-Eurostar
Direct from London St Pancras to Brussels - ten trains per day, takes
1hr 50, first train arrives Brussels 9am - and Lille (1hr 20) with connections
to Antwerp, Gent, Bruges and Namur.
Eurostar will also stop at Ebbsfleet (Bluewater, jct2 M25)) and Ashford,
Kent and there is a station planned at Stratford, East London, in 2009
Ferry
Several options for getting across the Channel to Belgium and Northern
France. Transeuropa Ferries runs from Ramsgate to Ostende and there are
P&O, Seafrance, Norfolk Line and Speeferry sailings to Calais, Dunkerque
and Boulogne
Dunkirk
Closest French port to the Belgian border (30km). Two hours sailing time
from Dover with Norfolk Line, which now has three new ferries.
Dunkirk town is halfway along the A16/E40, halfway to Belgium.
Things to see include the central square with nearby belfry which offers
great views over the town and coast.
Dunkirk is good for local beers, cheeses and gingerbread and there is
an Auchan supermarket outside town on the way to the ferry.
The 1940 Dunkirk beach is at Malo-les-Bains on the east side of the town.

Fly
Lots of flights to Brussels (Zaventem) but a better option is Ryanair
to Charleroi on the French-Belgium border. It’s a quieter airport
and great for fast road connections to the Ardennes and Flemish hills
