Philippe Gilbert (Français des Jeux)
Look at the result of Paris-Tours and you won’t find Gilbert in the top ten, nor the top 20 for that matter. He’s down in 27th place, which does not represent the Walloon rider’s contribution to this autumn Classic, and a load of others for that matter, including the recent world championship where he was 8th.
Gilbert got away with Pippo Pozzato and Karsten Kroon in the finale of Paris-Tours and the trio were caught with 500 metres to go as Erik Zabel led in the field. Gilbert was the strong man in the break and he is never afraid to attack and throw everything at a win or bust move. One day the big wins will come for Gilbert but until then his all or nothing riding means that he does no even figure in the top 25 of the ProTour rankings.
